Horrible Histories and Hetty Feather: how kids' books become TV hits
Proud to have been part of these two stonking hits. It all starts with the writers, the books, then the screenplays. But then - it always starts with the writers!

PARALLAX-Y-TOCIN at Pint of Science festival
A video art piece I created for Pint of Science 2016 festival.
Inspired by Richard Bethlehem's PhD research into autism, empathy, and oxytocin. He is studying the effects of oxytocin administration on resting state and task-related neural activation in the typical and autistic brain, in a study funded by the Autism Research Trust. http://www.autismresearchcentre.com/people_bethlehem
The images of pain are the actual photographs shown to participants in the study, while their brains are scanned in an MRI scanner. The participants are given oxytocin or a placebo to see whether feelings of empathy are affected. They are asked to believe firstly that the hand or foot is their own, then that they are someone else's.
The title refers to the montage sequence in The Parallax View.

Hetty Feather
This was my first taste of directing period drama. Smoke 'n' bonnets.
Hetty Feather is a new 10 part period drama for CBBC based on the book by best-selling author, Dame Jacqueline Wilson (creator of Tracy Beaker). It's all about Hetty, a young girl abandoned as a baby by her mother at the Foundling Hospital . This is a real place with a compelling, moving history.
Hetty Feather brings the realities of being a kid in the Victorian age – good, bad, funny and tragic – to life, through the eyes of the boys and girls who live in the Foundling Hospital. They endure the terrifying dictatorship of Matron Bottomley (played by Eva Pope). Punishments are the norm, kindness is a rarity. The Foundlings have to stick together.
12-year-old newcomer Isabel Clifton landed the role of Hetty - her first TV job!
I directed 5 episodes, all on location at Cobham Hall, a boarding school in Kent. It transmits in May.
I'd love to post behind the scenes photos but it's been strictly embargoed by the BBC ...

ShopGirl gets a new book deal!
Emily Benet (ShopGirl Blog writer, on the right) has just announced a new exciting 2 book deal with Harper Impulse - the romantic fiction bit of Harper Collins.
Shop Girl Blog at the London Short Film festival
Funny Shit. Can't say fairer than that. ShopGirl Blog was in the opening comedy shorts programme at the London Short Film Festival in January. Sadly I couldn't go, as I was eating sardines in Sidi Ifni (south Morocco) at the time, but the original Shop Girl herself, writer Emily Benet, went along to enjoy the laughs. Dave the (real) postman always steals the show with his one line.
